Equipment Required
For the Development Team, we will provide all boats, paddles, life jackets, and knee blocks for all athletes. Athletes should bring a towel and a change of clothes to wear should they fall in.
Behavior Expectations
We expect all athletes to follow our code of conduct and show respect to fellow athletes and coaching staff. Beyond this however we demand kindness, communication, teamwork, sportsmanship, individual responsibility, engagement, encouragement, patience and a hard working spirit. This team is built up of athletes who form lifelong bonds, and are strong not only physically but emotionally. As coaches, we hope to build up these qualities in our athletes, but we also require athletes to build these attributes among each other.
Race Opportunities
Development Team does have racing opportunities for those interested. We will host occasional small regattas at our club, where the athletes can show what they’ve learned and compete against one another and potentially other athletes from different clubs. There are also a number of distance races during the winter with events appropriate for Development team members.
Parent Engagement
Parent engagement is much appreciated, and volunteerism when coordinated with the coaching staff is always encouraged. The primary ways to support the team and your athlete are to read and stay up to date on communications, and ensure the timely drop-off and pickup of athletes.
Athlete Responsibilities
With the move to Development team, expectations change from summer camp to athletes having more responsibilities. Athletes are responsible for taking care of club equipment. This means telling a coach if a boat or paddle has been damaged, putting away all equipment properly and fully every practice, washing and carrying their boats to and from the water, arriving on time and cleaning up in an orderly fashion. All expectations will be clearly laid out and taught in Development Team.
Common Questions
What is Development Team?
Development Team is our way for summer campers to try out what the sport of Canoe and Kayak is like on a competitive level. It begins at the end of your Intro to Paddling Camp and ends mid September. At its conclusion we will no longer be hosting development team and your athletes will either be invited to join our sprint team or asked to come back next year.
